SUBLIMATION 101

Sublimation is a process that uses special inks to print on fabrics with very high SYNTHETIC fiber content. The special inks are made to change from a solid to a gas under high heat. This is called sublimation. These inks are water based in their composition, so their use is environmentally responsible.

This process only works on SYNTHETIC fibers. The synthetic fiber molecules contain “dye sites” in their polymer chain. These sites open under high heat and pressure to accept the ink molecules that are created as the ink changes its state from solid to gas. These color bits are trapped inside the dye sites as the pressure is released and the temperature is lowered.

The result is an exceptional color fastness and color retention life. Ironing can affect the colors adversely (re-applying high heat). This can re-open the dye sites thereby releasing some color molecules. If you must iron, do so on the inside of the garment with a very cool iron. Washing should also be done in cold water. The garments should not be wrung out nor should they be dry cleaned.
